Building

I built my own finance tracker instead of paying $7 a month

A finance app wanted $7 per month. I already pay for AI, so I built my own with Claude in one evening.

I found an app that helps track my finances. I checked the pricing. It costs $7 per month.

In the context of having AI that costs $20+ per month, why should I pay $7 for another app if I can build it with Claude? That’s what I actually did last evening. Opus 5.5 is really cool because it’s cost-efficient.

The app I built has very basic features. You can create folders, fill them with income, and the system summarizes it into your total net worth.

This is the second time the app’s price has encouraged me to create an alternative with AI.

I guess the fact that AI exists will affect some apps’ prices, because it will be easier to create competition.

Ofc it is not completed yet and I should make some fixes. My goal is to track my passive income to be able to make better financial decisions and measure my path to my golden number.

From the technical side, recently two of my friends said that I shouldn’t use Supabase as a database, but to be honest I didn’t get why. I’m a designer. What do I know about databases? Nothing 😅

Things I’m so proud of so far. I was able to:

  • Connect everything to the database and provide sign-up options.
  • Connect my bank card (I’m supporting only Monobank because it’s the bank that I like and use the most).
  • Connect my Interactive Brokers account to see my stock assets.
